Insulation FAQs & Information

To make informed decisions about the necessary replacement of materials, Ceiling insulation is measured in different thicknesses, which are determined by an R Value. An R Value is a standardised measurement of heat resistance, or how well a product works as an insulator.

Frequently Asked Questions

  • How does the Removal process work?

    A. Our team uses the most efficient and up to date technology to ensure that the job is done to the customer’s satisfaction. As there are two different types of insulation, loose fill, or solid batts they are removed in different ways.

Our trucks are mounted with a large vacuum tank purposely built to remove insulation and dust from the ceiling line. It is a very powerful machine that transfers the old loose material via a 75mm vacuum hose (capable of reaching up to 50 meters) through proper Hepa filters to a bag house with minimal human contact and exposing very little material to the outside air.

Old solid batts are bagged up by hand and then the vacuum system is used to remove any loose fill Insulation and dust left behind.

  • How long will my job take?

    A. We can complete approximately 40m2 per hour. Average size job will take 2 to 3 hours. There will generally be a team of 3 on site so as the old insulation is removed by one team member the new insulation will laid behind them by another.

  • Do I need to be at home when the job is being done?

    A. No one will need to be home as the preference is the team will access the ceiling space through the roof by removing some tiles or a sheet of tin and replacing it afterwards. If there is access into the property (i.e. not locked gates etc.) no one will need to be there unless ceiling access is to be through manhole and internal access required.

  • Will the job still go ahead if it is raining?

    A. Most likely yes unless it is very heavy rain at the time of the job we may have to reschedule. (the forecast is too unpredictable to reschedule ahead of time)

We can certainly reschedule if that is best for the customer however, we don’t like to do so based on weather forecast as it may be raining in one suburb and not in the next. We don’t open the whole roof, just a small access point, which we can close over ourselves once inside.

We would not put the roof space or insulation at risk of getting damaged by water.

  • What R Value should I choose?

The higher the R rating of the insulation batt the higher the density, therefore more effective.

If you are looking at upgrading the insulation for your own benefits (i.e., not renting out the house or planning on selling the property soon) then the higher rated batt is recommended as you will see the results of what you are paying for.

If you are not working to achieve a certain energy rating, it really is a personal choice. All ratings quoted would be both sufficient and beneficial.

  • Can we relay the existing batts after vacuuming?

    A. We do not recommend reusing the same batts they would be contaminated by dust/dirt and any loose insulation in the roof cavity. These cannot be cleaned due to the delicate material.

In our professional opinion it would defeat the purpose of vacuuming/cleaning the ceiling line because as soon the old batts were re-laid you would be back to where you started.

  • Do you lay new insulation over the top of old material?

    A. We do not recommend installing over existing insulation as we cannot guarantee the quality of our work. It will not be laid on the ceiling line neatly between the timbers as recommended by the manufacturer to achieve full potential. We also do not know what we are laying over (i.e., what is underneath the current insulation; electrical wires?). Rodents also love to live in between the two layers and often nest in gaps created by a double layer.

  • Do you lay insulation on top of downlights / ceiling fans and exhaust fans?

    A. We leave a safe gap (20mm) around all downlights and (200mm) for halogen / fans / exhaust fans etc. inside the roof space.

  • Are you fully insured?

    A. Yes, we have full public liability insurance and workers’ compensation. We take full responsibility for any damages caused directly by our work / workers and would cover any repair costs.
